One of the first settlers to Indian Valley was Job Taylor. He and his party made the long trek from Salt Lake City in the early 1850s to find their fortune in the gold fields of California. When they happened upon Indian Valley, they set up camp, now called Taylorsville, and started to prospect. On one of his explorations to the high peaks of the area, he found a river deposit on the top of the mountain. After exploring around for a while and to his amazement, the gravels contained gold! That high peak was later named Mount Jura and the rich river deposit bares the same name. Job Taylor had the finest pickings of the area and he preferred this one spot because of its beautiful view and rich amounts of gold. Taylor’s Diggings, as it is called, was extensively mined for several years and provided much of the financial backing the Taylor family needed during those early times.

  • Excellent camping on the claim.
  • 2wd access.
  • Easy access to creek at many locations.
  • Local gravels on bedrock (mostly on Forman's Gold 2).
  • Large to huge gravel bars.
  • Some remnant terraces.
  • Tree roots & grass clumps, downed trees, logs, etc.
  • Medium to shallow water.
  • Mining level: Recreational to advanced.
  • Quiet and safe area; very beautiful.
  • Children and senior friendly - fun for all!
  • Nearest town: Taylorsville (few amenities but cute). Greenville is 10 miles away and has stores, gas stations, hardware stores.

Forman’s Ravine is a drainage on the western flank of Mt. Jura and drains the slope just below Taylor’s Diggings. The mining claim is located just down slope of the bedrock-alluvial fan transition point, which is the area where the large rocks and heavy metals should drop out. There are excellent sites for RV camping and access can be made by 2wd.

The creek has seasonal flow, but groundwater is a short distance below the surface in the late summer months. There are unexplored remnant terraces with exposed tree roots, abandoned alluvial channels, and much, much more. Gold is both fine and coarse-grained. An excellent site for a large or small trommel operation.
