Geology: This area is underlain by a series of northwest-trending beds of Paleozoic and Mesozoic metamorphic rocks. They are: pre-Devonian metarhyolite; Silurian metasedimentary rocks; Taylorsville Formation (Devonian) slate and sandstone; Taylor Meta-andesite (Carboniferous); Calaveras Formation (Carboniferous to Permian) metasedimentary rocks (four formations); greenstones (Carboniferous); Triassic metasedimentary rocks; Jurassic granodiorite and serpentinized basic and ultra-basic intrusives. Overlying the bedrock are patches of Tertiary and Quarternary gravels.

Ore Deposits: A number of northwest-striking quartz veins occur principally in the greenstones, slates, and granodiorite. Some of the veins are as much as 20 feet thick. The ore contains free gold, auriferous pyrite, and smaller amounts of other sulfides. The surface ores were especially rich, and numerous high-grade pockets were encountered during the early days. Milling-grade ore usually contained slightly less than 1/4 ounce per ton, but the ore shoots had stooping lengths of up to 300 feet. Iron and copper also occur in the district.

This Wolf Creek flows east to west along Highway 89 between Canyon Dam and Greenville and drains the highly mineralized marine and volcanic rocks of the Shoe Fly, Sierra Buttes, Peale and Arlington Formations, which spans ages of 425-260 million years, and are collectively referred to as the Sierrian Eastern Belt Assemblage. Bedrock gold mineralization is found in several forms, including, quartz veins and pods, disseminated aureoles, and scarns. Hardrock mines, such as the Goldstripe, Clear Creek and Davis Mines, produced thousands of pounds of gold from these rocks, and the headwaters Wolf Creek begins in the vicinity of these mines. Wolf Creek gold is coarse-grained and very bright.

The Golden Wolf placer claim is the dumping ground of the Wolf Creek gravels and cobbles. The creek exits the mountains and begins to flow across the valley floor, dropping out all of its coarse-grained and heavy material and forming large gravel deposits. Anceint floods have branched out from the active channel, scouring out vegetation and creating abandoned channels that are dry during the late summer and autumn months and are ripe for prospecting. Remnant terrace deposit are common on the valley walls and create excellent high-bank opportunities, many of which have never been explored. This claim has a good campsite with 2wd access to the creek’s edge. It is ideal site for a small trommel-type operation.

Standard Information
The Location Notice for the Golden Wolf placer mining claim has been recorded at the Plumas County Recorder's Office (see registered number above) and the Bureau of Land Management federal mining claim number is pending. It is a non-patented federal mining claim. Fees are current and you will need to file appropriate paperwork to hold the property every year thereafter. Annual tax assessment on the property is approximately $1.12 an acre.
