The United States is home to what many believe are the world’s largest Lithium deposits. The demand for Lithium is soaring due to their use in portable rechargeable batteries and especially now for electric vehicles. After decades of shifting production overseas, the battery industry is now racing to move the supply chains back to the United States and make batteries from domestic raw materials.
 
Nevada already occupies a prominent place in the lithium market with the only facility in North America that produces lithium concentrates, the last step before refining and the use in batteries. At Silver Peak in Esmeralda County, roughly halfway between Las Vegas and Reno, one company has a facility that has operated since the mid-1960s.
 
Natural lithium comes in a few specific forms and in Nevada, it occurs as dissolved salts in groundwater (brine) or in lithium-rich volcanic sediments. The production from brines requires that the groundwater is pumped to the surface and allowed to evaporate in large ponds to form concentrates salts, which are scooped up and refined. Production of lithium from sediments is new and if successful, Nevada can supply all the domestic needs for lithium.
