Earthquake Reports

Special Reports:

Advanced Geologic are experts in earthquake activity, both regionally and globally. They have been reporting on earthquake activity for more than 25 years in the news media, crossing multiple platforms including newspapers, television, radio and the internet.

Advanced Geologic has published earthquake reports under two names:

The Earthquake Report serviced residents of Northeastern California and northwestern Nevada and was published in the Feather River Newspaper Syndicate, which served Lassen and Plumas Counties. The publication began in 2005 and enjoyed a wide following until 2020 when it closed due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. It was a single report provided to the newspaper for free. This is the only earthquake report now Produced by Advanced Geologic.

The Earthquake Report covers a specific area of northeastern California and western Nevada. Activity is relatively light with and average of 10-20 M 1.0+ earthquakes each week. Structurally, it covers the northern margin of the Sierra Nevada, the southern margin of the Modoc Plateau, the northern Sacramento Valley, and the northwestern Basin and Range geomorphic provinces. Geologically, there are numerous active faults capable of M 7+ earthquakes and it is home to several active volcanos, including Lassen Peak that last erupted from 1915-1922. There occasional earthquake bursts and swarms and moderate jolts, but only a handful of M 5+ earthquakes. It is an area ripe for a large, damaging earthquake, therefore, watching the weekly activity gives local residents a perspective to the earth on the move below their feet.

Seismo-Watch began in 1992 and had been published in more than 47 newspapers in seven western states. It also had been featured on television and the radio in a variety of forms, including the evening and morning news broadcasts. During its robust period in the late 1990s to 2002, the Seismo-Watch web site garnished more than 2 million hits and over a 100,000 pageviews per month. Seismo-Watch was hailed by numerous government agencies for its contribution in to earthquake safety, including the US Geological Survey, the Federal Emergency Management Association, the California Office of Emergency Services. In 2000, Charles Watson received the Outstanding Achievement Award from the Nevada Earthquake Safety Council in recognition for his work with Seismo-Watch in the State of Nevada.

Seismo-Watch enjoyed a select group newspapers and a low profile web site to maintain public awareness into this fascinating world of geology. It was the standard for quality earthquake reports. Weekly online earthquake reports were once published at the following links (Site was recently discontinued).

  • Central California Earthquake Report
  • Southern California Earthquake Report
  • Other past earthquakes can be seen here.

Special Note - March 13, 2009: Due to the downturn in the economy and increasing financial pressures on the newspaper business, the Orange County Register and the Eureka Times-Standard discontinued their Seismo-Watch earthquake report service. These were the last two earthquake reports in the Seismo-Watch series. This is truly sad news as both of these publications ran for nearly 15 years. Please contact their managing editors for complaints.
